SANITATION



The Sanitarian in Orange County educates for the goal of preventing disease outbreaks, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the community.

The Sanitarian is responsible for handling all food safety, permitting, inspections, and complaints at any food establishment in the county. We investigate all food complaints.

They are responsible for the overseeing and compliance of state codes regarding all on-site septic permitting and inspections. All residential and commercial sewage disposal systems that are not connected to a regulated sewage facility, are required to obtain a septic permit. All repairs and new construction must be inspected and signed off by our inspector. We investigate all sewage complaints.

Many environmental complaints are taken care of by the county sanitarian as well. All environmental complaints must be formally filed in the Health Department office. We will not handle these by phone.



VITAL RECORDS



The Registrar in Orange County is charged with the responsibility to accurately register, maintain the integrity of, and preserve the records of the vital events of the citizens of Orange County.

The Orange County Health Department houses the birth and death records for persons who were born in or died in Orange County. These records include the current records and those dating back to 1882.

For all birth and death records outside of Orange County, you may contact the specific county where the event took place or the Indiana State Department of Health by calling (317) 233-2700.

GENEALOGY REQUESTS
Records requested for genealogy purposes must be done in person between the hours of 9-11am or 1-3pm and is limited to no more than 5 searches per day. In order for us to provide an accurate search, you must have full name and date of birth or death for the person whose record you are requesting. Under Indiana law, birth records are not publicly accessible for 75 years to protect privacy and identity.

The Department of Health does not have records of marriage and/or divorce. Those records are recorded and kept in the office of the Orange County Clerk, phone number (812) 723-2649.





NURSING



The Public Health Nurse (PHN) in Orange County provides education for citizens, as well as vaccinations and programs that prevent diseases, protect citizens, and promote health lifestyles.

The PHN provides both childhood and adult immunizations, as well as TB testing. Without vaccines, epidemics of many preventable diseases could return, resulting in increased and unnecessary illness, disability and death.

The PHN is responsible for epidemiological investigation of communicable diseases and reporting to Indiana State Department of Health. The PHN also works to prevent, control and identify contacts and reactors prior to development of active cases of Tuberculosis, and to provide monthly TB medications and follow up therapy for patients.

Animal bite reports are managed by the PHN and reported to the State Department of Health.

Reports in children with high lead levels will be submitted to PHN for investigation and inspection of suspected source will be completed, aided by state lead inspectors.
